The Rivers and Streams We Fish

A beautiful trout caught on the Davidson River

Davidson River

The Davidson River is one of the most recognized trout streams in the Southeast and a cornerstone of fly fishing in Western North Carolina. Known for its clear water, heavy insect hatches, and large population of trout, the Davidson offers anglers the chance to target both stocked and wild rainbow and brown trout in a classic mountain river setting.

The river is famous for technical fishing. Long leaders, accurate drifts, and careful presentation often make the difference between refusal and hookup, especially in its heavily pressured catch-and-release sections. At the same time, strong hatches of mayflies, caddis, and midges create outstanding dry fly fishing opportunities throughout much of the year.

Guided trips on the Davidson are ideal for anglers looking to improve their fly fishing skills while fishing one of North Carolina’s premier trout rivers. Beginners can learn essential techniques in productive water, while experienced anglers can test themselves against selective trout in challenging conditions.

Located near Brevard and surrounded by the scenic beauty of Pisgah National Forest, the Davidson River combines technical trout fishing, beautiful mountain scenery, and year-round opportunities into a true destination fishery.

French Broad River

The French Broad River is home to some of the best muskie fishing in the Southeast. These apex predators are known as “the fish of 10,000 casts” for a reason — they are aggressive, powerful, and notoriously difficult to fool. Hooking a muskie on a fly rod or conventional tackle is an experience most anglers never forget.

The French Broad offers ideal muskie habitat with deep pools, ledges, current seams, and structure that consistently hold fish throughout the year. Anglers target muskies by casting large streamers, swimbaits, and topwater presentations around ambush points where these fish wait to attack prey. Explosive follows and violent strikes are common, especially during low-light conditions and changing weather patterns.

Guided muskie trips are designed for anglers looking for a true trophy predator experience. Whether fly fishing or using conventional gear, trips focus on locating active fish, understanding muskie behavior, and covering water efficiently. Patience and persistence are part of the game, but the payoff can be a fish exceeding 40 inches with incredible strength and attitude.

East Fork of the French Broad River

The East Fork of the French Broad River offers some of the most consistent and scenic trout fishing in Western North Carolina. Cold mountain water, deep runs, pocket water, and healthy insect populations create excellent habitat for rainbow, brown, and brook trout.

Trips on the East Fork are ideal for both beginners and experienced fly fishermen. New anglers benefit from manageable water and high fish numbers, while experienced anglers enjoy the challenge of reading current seams, matching hatches, and targeting larger wild trout in secluded stretches.

Backcountry Waters

Backcountry trout trips offer anglers the chance to leave crowds behind and fish the remote mountain streams of Western North Carolina. These smaller rivers and high-elevation creeks flow through rugged forest, rhododendron tunnels, and untouched stretches of wilderness where wild trout thrive in cold, clear water.

Trips focus on hiking into less-pressured water in areas surrounding Pisgah National Forest and Nantahala National Forest.  Anglers can expect aggressive wild rainbow, brown, and native brook trout willing to strike dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers in classic pocket water and plunge pools.

Backcountry fishing is less about numbers and more about the overall experience — solitude, scenery, and wild fish in their natural environment. These trips are ideal for anglers who enjoy exploration, light hiking, and technical small-stream fishing. The terrain can vary from easy roadside access to more demanding hikes into remote water, depending on client preference and conditions.

For experienced fly fishermen, backcountry trips provide opportunities to target untouched trout in hidden water rarely seen by other anglers. For newer anglers, they offer a memorable introduction to the mountain streams that make Western North Carolina one of the premier trout fishing destinations in the country.
